Sopwith Camel Pilot's Seat

We had the drawings but needed to develop the skills and learn to interpret the plans.

At the Wetlands Centre we found seats but not exactly right for a Sopwith Camel.  Although the plans said 'wicker' we found cane was the more normal material for the times, as seen in the 1917 AGS catalogue. Shame we couldn't buy one off the shelf as they used to!

We eventually checked our interpretations against an original seat at the Kent Battle of Britain  Museum at Hawkinge.

First buy some cane then build a jig and bend it into shape.  Then buy some more cane for the weaving.

After internet searches, we found Hilary Burns who was prepared to help us interpret the plans, teach us some skills and start us off on the chairs. After a day working on her kitchen table we were on our own!
